ANAT. Éminence thénar ou, plus rarement, thénar. Saillie située sur la partie externe de la main et formée par les muscles courts du pouce. La force d'appui des doigts sur la touche [des instruments à archet] ne sera recherchée que par le mouvement d'opposition des doigts par rapport au pouce. Le travail sera localisé dans les muscles de l'éminence thénar (...) et les fléchisseurs des doigts (LALLEMENT, Dyn. instrum. archet, 1925, p. 124).
Prononc.:[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1555 anat. le thenar de la main (VIDIUS, Anciens et renommés auteurs de la médecine, 910 ds Fonds BARBIER). Empr. au gr. « partie déprimée d'une surface, creux » en partic. « creux ou paume de la main ».
